Deep blue drifts through clear glass the way a shadow crosses shallow water. This is Itoman blue — the colour of the sea off the southern coast of Okinawa, settled into a single tone. The bowl is deep enough to serve from and shallow enough to serve into, so it takes a salad in the middle of the table or one portion at a place setting. The blue pools differently in every one.

いとまん日和を、手のなかに

Itoman Biyori means a fine day in Itoman, and the colour has a name of its own: sora, the word for sky. It is the blue of a clear day over the south of the island, running up the wall of the glass in white-edged streaks. This is the tall one — water in the morning, something longer and colder after dark. Made for ordinary days rather than occasions.

「いとまん日和」は、糸満のなんでもない一日のこと。色にも名前があります。「そら」。晴れた日の、島の南の空の色です。白いふちをもつ筋が、グラスの壁を立ちのぼります。背の高い一杯は、朝の水に、夜のもう少し長いものに。特別な日ではなく、ふつうの日のための器です。

Wide enough for a single large cube and steady in the hand — for whiskey, or for awamori on the rocks the island way. The sora blue gathers at the base and thins as it climbs, so as the ice melts and the light shifts, the colour never quite sits still. Same clear-day sky as the rest of Itoman Biyori.

Tingara Milky Way Glass

Tingara is the Okinawan word for the Milky Way. Silver leaf is scattered through the wall as stars, and a light-storing material is layered in beside it — leave the glass under a lamp for a while, turn the room dark, and the band of stars comes up. On an island with few streetlights that sky is available most of the year, not only in summer. Clear or Aqua; both hold the same night.

沖縄では、天の川を「てぃんがーら」といいます。銀箔を星として散らし、その横に光をためる素材を重ねました。しばらく明かりに当ててから部屋を暗くすると、星の帯が浮かび上がります。街灯の少ない島では、この空が夏だけでなく一年を通して見えるのだそうです。色はクリアと青。どちらも同じ夜を抱えています。

十月の、最初の涼しい風

Around October a north wind reaches Okinawa, and the island calls it miiniishi. The heat has let go, the wind has not turned cold yet, and it is the easiest season for drinking awamori slowly — there is a saying here, ichariba choodee: once we have met, we are family. Blue, aqua and green carry that first cool wind into the glass. Aqua or Green.

十月ごろ、沖縄に吹きはじめる北風を「みぃーにし」といいます。残暑がやわらぎ、まだ北風も冷たくない。泡盛をゆっくり楽しめる、いちばん過ごしやすい季節です。島には「イチャリバチョーデー」という言葉があります。一度会えば、みな兄弟。青・水・緑のガラスに、その最初の涼しさを映しました。色は青水と緑水。
