mado Tumbler S [mado タンブラー S]
Cars reach the end of their life at a scrapyard. Takunan Shoji, a recycling company in Okinawa, strips out the side windows and sends the glass to the furnace, where Ryukyu glass makers blow it back into something that belongs on a table. Neither color is added. Ice Green is the tint of ordinary side glass and Smoky Black is the tint of privacy glass. After the war Okinawa restarted its glass industry on melted bottles because nothing else was available. mado does the same thing on purpose. The series holds a Good Design Award.
The surface carries a diamond mould pattern. A smaller tumbler. Water, tea, or a short pour.
Every piece is made by hand, so size, color, pattern and the way the bubbles sit will differ from one to the next. Not heatproof. Keep it out of the dishwasher, the drying cabinet and the freezer.
