Hanabira-mochi was originally served 1,000 years ago at the Imperial Court during New Year's in a ceremony praying for longevity and good health. Mochi was topped with wild boar meat, salted sweetfish, and daikon radish. Over time, the sweetfish was replaced with burdock, and during the Meiji period a Kyoto wagashi shop began to make Hanabira-mochi for the first tea ceremony of the year, Hatsugama. No longer confined to the court, Hanabira-mochi became a New Year's tradition to be enjoyed by all.
The tradition of enjoying Obukucha at New Year's goes back to the 10th century. In 951, a serious epidemic swept through Kyoto. To relieve the suffering, the Buddhist priest Kuya distributed tea to the people, and Emperor Murakami is said to have ushered in the New Year with a special cup of tea that year. Since then it has been a Japanese tradition to drink Obukucha around the New Year. Released only around the holiday season, it is a tea to drink in celebration of the arrival of a new year.
