Itoman sits at the southern edge of Okinawa, where the island runs out and the water begins. Everything on these shelves was made there, by hand, at Itoman Glass Works. The colour you are looking at has a name — Itoman blue — and it is the water off that southern coast, gathered and held still in glass.
Look for the blue first, then look for what moves inside it. In the Itoman Blue bowl, deep blue drifts through clear glass the way a shadow drifts across shallow water. In Itoman Biyori — a fine day in Itoman — the colour is called sora, the word for sky, and it is the blue of a clear day over the south of the island. One is the sea. One is the sky above it. Set them side by side and you have the same afternoon, twice.
Two of the pieces here come from another hour of that day. Tingara is the Okinawan word for the Milky Way, and the workshop scatters silver leaf through the wall as stars, then layers in a material that stores light. Leave the glass under a lamp, turn the room dark, and the band of stars comes up. Miiniishi is the north wind that reaches Okinawa around October — the heat has let go, the wind has not turned cold, and the island calls it the easiest season for drinking awamori slowly. Blue, aqua and green carry that first cool wind into the glass.
Here is the honest part. Every piece is shaped by hand, so no two are alike: the size shifts a little, the colour pools differently, the bubbles sit where they sit. None of that is a defect. It is the record of one piece, made once, on one day in Itoman. Hold one up to the light before you choose.
沖縄本島の南のはし、島が終わり、海がはじまるところに糸満はあります。ここに並ぶ器は、すべてその町の工房・糸満硝子製作所で、ひとつずつ手で作られたものです。
青には名前があります。糸満ブルー。南の海の色を、そのままひとつの青にまとめた色です。「糸満ブルー 中鉢」では、透明なガラスのなかを深い青が流れ、浅瀬を横切る影のように見えます。「いとまん日和」の色は「そら」。糸満の、晴れた日の空の色です。ひとつは海、ひとつはその上の空。並べて置けば、同じ午後がふたつ、そこにあります。
同じ一日の、別の時間から来た器もあります。沖縄では天の川を「てぃんがーら」と呼びます。銀箔を星として散らし、光をためる素材を重ねました。しばらく明かりに当ててから部屋を暗くすると、星の帯が浮かび上がります。「みぃーにし」は、十月ごろに沖縄へ吹きはじめる北風のこと。残暑がやわらぎ、まだ冷たくならない、泡盛をゆっくり楽しめる季節です。青・水・緑のガラスが、その最初の涼しさを映しています。
ひとつだけ、先にお伝えしておきたいことがあります。すべて手作りのため、同じものは二つとありません。大きさは少しずつ違い、色の溜まり方も、気泡の入り方も、一つひとつ異なります。それは欠点ではなく、糸満のある一日に、一度だけ作られた器の記録です。選ぶ前に、どうぞ光にかざしてみてください。

Deep blue drifts through clear glass the way a shadow crosses shallow water. This is Itoman blue — the colour of the sea off the southern coast of Okinawa, settled into a single tone. The bowl is deep enough to serve from and shallow enough to serve into, so it takes a salad in the middle of the table or one portion at a place setting. The blue pools differently in every one.
透明なガラスのなかを、深い青が流れます。浅瀬を横切る影のように。沖縄本島南部の海の色を、ひとつの青にまとめた「糸満ブルー」です。取り分けにも、盛り付けにも使える深さ。テーブルの中央にサラダを、あるいは一人分の一皿を。青の溜まり方は、ひとつずつ違います。

Itoman Biyori means a fine day in Itoman, and the colour has a name of its own: sora, the word for sky. It is the blue of a clear day over the south of the island, running up the wall of the glass in white-edged streaks. This is the tall one — water in the morning, something longer and colder after dark. Made for ordinary days rather than occasions.
「いとまん日和」は、糸満のなんでもない一日のこと。色にも名前があります。「そら」。晴れた日の、島の南の空の色です。白いふちをもつ筋が、グラスの壁を立ちのぼります。背の高い一杯は、朝の水に、夜のもう少し長いものに。特別な日ではなく、ふつうの日のための器です。

Wide enough for a single large cube and steady in the hand — for whiskey, or for awamori on the rocks the island way. The sora blue gathers at the base and thins as it climbs, so as the ice melts and the light shifts, the colour never quite sits still. Same clear-day sky as the rest of Itoman Biyori.
大きめの氷がひとつ入る口径。手にしっかりおさまる安定感です。ウイスキーにも、島のやり方で泡盛のロックにも。「そら」の青は底に溜まり、上へゆくほど薄くなります。氷が溶け、光が傾くたび、色の表情も静かに変わります。「いとまん日和」の、同じ晴れた日の空です。

Tingara is the Okinawan word for the Milky Way. Silver leaf is scattered through the wall as stars, and a light-storing material is layered in beside it — leave the glass under a lamp for a while, turn the room dark, and the band of stars comes up. On an island with few streetlights that sky is available most of the year, not only in summer. Clear or Aqua; both hold the same night.
沖縄では、天の川を「てぃんがーら」といいます。銀箔を星として散らし、その横に光をためる素材を重ねました。しばらく明かりに当ててから部屋を暗くすると、星の帯が浮かび上がります。街灯の少ない島では、この空が夏だけでなく一年を通して見えるのだそうです。色はクリアと青。どちらも同じ夜を抱えています。

Around October a north wind reaches Okinawa, and the island calls it miiniishi. The heat has let go, the wind has not turned cold yet, and it is the easiest season for drinking awamori slowly — there is a saying here, ichariba choodee: once we have met, we are family. Blue, aqua and green carry that first cool wind into the glass. Aqua or Green.
十月ごろ、沖縄に吹きはじめる北風を「みぃーにし」といいます。残暑がやわらぎ、まだ北風も冷たくない。泡盛をゆっくり楽しめる、いちばん過ごしやすい季節です。島には「イチャリバチョーデー」という言葉があります。一度会えば、みな兄弟。青・水・緑のガラスに、その最初の涼しさを映しました。色は青水と緑水。
