Sea Mirror Sake Cup [海かがんぐいのみ]
Umikagan is an old Okinawan word for the sea holding the sky. Clouds pass overhead and the water gives them back like a mirror. Winter wind runs hard across these islands, so the clouds move fast and the color of the sea shifts through the afternoon. This series was built on that idea: loose cloud forms over a base of black. The black carries the weight, the cloud carries the movement. Formal enough to set out for guests, easy enough for a weeknight. Hand formed in Itoman, Okinawa.
This one is orange. A small cup that settles into the palm, sized for awamori poured a little at a time.
Every piece is made by hand, so size, color, pattern and the way the bubbles sit will differ from one to the next. Not heatproof. Keep it out of the dishwasher, the drying cabinet and the freezer.
